Do You Need a Humidifier? Here's How to Tell

Do you have dry, itchy skin? Are you experiencing static electricity build-up? Is your hair or clothing reacting to the room? These are all signs that the humidity levels in your home may be too low. The ideal humidity level should be between 35 and 50%, and if you're not reaching that magic number, you may need a humidifier. To find out if your home is in the 35 to 50% range, you'll need a hygrometer. This tool is used to measure the humidity level in the air.

Place it in the room and check your reading. Normal humidity levels will be between 30 and 50 percent, but this can vary with temperature. For example, if the temperature is lower than 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-28 degrees Celsius), you may only want about 15 percent humidity. Static electricity increases considerably when humidity is too low, since normal humidity levels no longer block static charges.

This can be potentially destructive, since the accumulated charge can be several hundred volts and is sufficient to destroy electronic components. You may also be able to detect these changes in the way your hair or clothing reacts to the room. Dry sinuses, a bloody nose, and chapped lips can all be alleviated by using a humidifier. Cold steam humidifiers can also help relieve symptoms of a cold or other respiratory condition.
